Reimagining Heritage in Geelong: adaptive reuse and the transformation of historic buildings

Presented by

City of Greater Geelong - Built Heritage Team

Location

Podium Room 1, Wurriki Nyal, 137-149 Mercer St, Geelong VIC 3220

Join Cameron Hamilton, Managing Director of Hamilton Group as he explores how innovative design and strategic development can breathe new life into Geelong’s historic buildings. With extensive experience in property development and heritage preservation, Hamilton Group has played a pivotal role in transforming historic buildings into vibrant, sustainable and functional spaces for current and future generations.

Attendees will gain insights into the challenges and opportunities of repurposing heritage buildings, and how this approach strengthens Geelong’s cultural and architectural identity and responds to the city’s evolving urban fabric. The session will also highlight the unique stories behind key heritage buildings in Geelong, exploring their original roles in the city’s history and the cultural values they represent.

Hamilton Group was recognised with a national award in 2022 by the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) for their work on Pivot City, showcasing their commitment to innovative urban development. In 2024, their Woolstores project on Pakington Street is a UDIA Victorian finalist, highlighting their continued excellence in adaptive reuse projects
